HF on living with ulcerative colitis

I was diagnosed in 2005 with ulcerative colitis (UC). Unsure of how long I may have had it I have suffered through abdominal cramping, fatigue and up to 26 bloody and loose stools and a course of various treatments by various providers. In January 2022 I was hospitalized for about 4 days following a sigmoidoscopy and beginning treatment with a biologic treatment via infusion. I am grateful for my provider for his thoroughness and for listening to me and taking time to find path to my remission. Although I was worried, I might be dying when I received a personal call from a physician, but seriously appreciate the time and treatment I received. I have been in remission for around 2 years, and it has made a huge impact on my life, for the better and I am so grateful.

I have been a patient, a caregiver, and a nurse; among other things and have had U.C. during these times.

My advice?

  • Go with your gut, literally; you are your own best advocate if something doesn't feel right it probably isn't.

  • Seeking help is not a sign of weakness but wisdom.

  • Do the thing! People sometimes have told me I can't, sometimes I thought I couldn't. But sometimes you just must put on your big girl pants or depends and go on the trip, pursue the career, start a family; do the thing!

  • Find gratitude and be aware of yourself and your support systems. I am grateful for my friends and family, husband, and my faith in Jesus.

Who Am I? A masterpiece, filled with mess and beauty, I am not UC!
